Brooklyn Families of Homicide Victims Program: Safe Horizon’s Families of Homicide Victims Program has been helping children, teens and adults cope with the murder of loved ones since 1979. Through age-appropriate support groups, individual and family counseling and advocacy, our experienced counselors offer practical assistance, including help accessing funds for funeral expenses and compensation for lost earnings and guidance navigating the criminal justice system. Moreover, we offer children and families the emotional support of others who have had similar experiences and the compassionate expertise of specially-trained trauma counselors.
Counseling Center: Brooklyn is home to the only mental health clinic in New York City licensed to work with children and adult victims of crime and abuse who are experiencing the symptoms of trauma. The program provides more than 4,500 hours of counseling each year and is so effective, we plan to establish satellites of the Center in each borough.
Brooklyn Family and Criminal Court Children’s Centers: A day in court can be stressful and frightening for children involved in a court case. Safe Horizon provides a safe, child-friendly space where child victims, witnesses and children of adults who must appear in court can receive free, supportive, educational child care. We also offer parents crucial information and referrals on child care programs, Head Start, child health and nutrition, and developmental care.
Brooklyn Family and Criminal Court Programs: Safe Horizon operates over 30 court-based programs throughout the five boroughs. These programs include victim/witness reception centers, supervised visitation programs, mediation services, advocacy, crisis intervention, help with court-ordered restitution and other legal issues.
School Programs: One of Safe Horizon’s eight School Programs operates in the BASE high school in Crown Heights, empowering Brooklyn’s children and teens to learn non-violent life skills and develop schoolwide strategies for reducing violence and abuse.
Shelters: Safe Horizon operates two shelters in Brooklyn, serving over 400 women and children fleeing domestic violence. We offer families from all over the city a confidential respite where they can begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
Brooklyn Community Office: Safe Horizon’s Brooklyn Community Office draws citizens from throughout the borough in search of a compassionate ear, a guide through the criminal justice system, a safe place to sleep.
Jane Barker Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center: Every child deserves a life free from violence and full of possibilities. Yet each day in this country, nearly four children die as a result of child abuse in the home. In New York City, more than 50,000 cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every year, and the number is increasing.
At Safe Horizon’s Child Advocacy Centers (CACs), victims of child physical and sexual abuse and their families find the help they need fast in one location. The police, Assistant District Attorneys, medical professionals, counselors, and child protective workers are “co-located” under one roof, in a child-friendly environment that minimizes the trauma and begins the healing process as soon as families step through the door.
Safe Horizon’s three Child Advocacy Centers in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island support more than 5,000 abused children and their families each year. To increase our capacity to assist many more families at our existing CACs, we are pursuing several new initiatives, including extending staff hours to make it easier for families to access our services without missing work or school. Moreover, Safe Horizon will be developing two new co-located Child Advocacy Centers in Manhattan and the Bronx, bringing these lifesaving services to every borough.
