14th Annual Champion Awards Journeys of Hope June 10, 2009
On Wednesday, June 10, 2009, over 400 supporters gathered at Safe Horizon’s 14th Annual Champion Awards. The theme of the event was Journeys of Hope, a celebration to honor those who help move victims of violence from crisis to confidence.
With the help of William S. Ohlemeyer, partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, as the Dinner Chair, our generous underwriter Phillips-Van Heusen and all of our benefactors and longstanding partners, the event was a great success. The evening was a celebration of Safe Horizon and those outstanding companies and individuals whose vision, hard work and generous contributions have helped us make great strides against violence and victimization.
Mike Slocum, Executive Vice President of Commercial Banking at Capital One, accepted the Champion Award on behalf of Capital One Bank for their longstanding support of our work, especially of Child Advocacy Centers and child abuse awareness initiatives. Capital One Bank is also the proud national sponsor of Safe Horizon’s Hope Shining campaign, dedicated to shedding light on the hidden issues surrounding child abuse. Our Board Member, José Raúl Pérez, presented Mr. Slocum with the award.
Safe Horizon Board Member and bestselling novelist Linda Fairstein presented the 2009 Champion Award to Brooke McMurray, who served as Safe Horizon’s Board Chair from 2003 to 2008. Ms. McMurray’s award was in recognition of her outstanding leadership and outspoken advocacy for victims of domestic violence. A domestic violence survivor, Brooke has publicly shared her story of abuse and recovery over the years as our national spokesperson. We could not be more grateful to Brooke, whose personal journey has in turn helped countless victims of domestic violence towards their own journeys of hope.
A highlight of the evening was a moving testimonial by Aurelia Rivera, a Safe Horizon client and domestic violence survivor. Ms. Rivera’s story of triumph over abuse underscored both the need for and the transformative power of supportive services for crime victims.
An art gallery was set up displaying emotionally-driven artwork--from t-shirts to quilts--created by former victims that have received support from Safe Horizon. The pieces were both tangible representations of their personal journeys of hope as well as tokens of their appreciation.
Touching the lives of more than 350,000 victims of violence each year requires substantial funding. Although our Champion Awards Dinner has passed, our need for funding has not. Please consider making a gift to our Champion Awards Dinner fund. With your continued support, we hope to help even more men, women and children heal and rebuild their lives.
